Esophageal Scintigraphy in Systemic Sclerosis: A Simplified Imaging and Reporting Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
Patients suffering from systemic sclerosis can suffer from significant esophageal dysmotility. Standard tests such as esophageal manometry are invasive and can be distressing to the patient. Esophageal scintigraphy would be ideal, but most protocols are too time consuming for a busy clinical department. The aim of this study was to produce an optimal imaging and reporting protocol that would allow esophageal scintigraphy to become a standard clinical tool. Methods: We imaged 301 patients using a single swallow of a radiolabeled puree meal with the patient erect and in the supine position. A condensed image was produced, which was reported semiquantitatively using a five-point grading scale (0-4), where 0 was normal and 4 represented severe dysmotility. Results: All patients, even those with severe dysphagia, were able to tolerate the test. A sample of 25 studies was reported twice by two observers, who were blind to this study. There was no significant intraor interobserver variation. Conclusion: We recommend this method in routine assessment of patients with systemic sclerosis.

Esophageal transit scintigraphy in systemic sclerosis
Systemic sclerosis is a rare connective tissue disease, distinctive features of which are fibrosis and microangiopathy. The esophagus is one of the most commonly involved internal organs. Most patients experience dysphagia, difficulties in swallowing and gastro-esophageal reflux. However, in up to one third of cases, the initial onset of esophageal disease may be clinically silent. There are se...
متن کاملDystrophic Calcinosis in a Patient with Scleroderma: Imaging Findings and Literature Review
Subcutaneous calcinosis consists of abnormal calcium deposition in soft tissues and is one of the complications of scleroderma, especially in limited systemic sclerosis. It is one of the criteria of CREST syndrome (calcinosis cutis, Raynaud phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia). A 44-year-old woman with systemic scleroderma for 20 years was presented with pain ...
متن کاملUsefulness of three-phase bone scintigraphy and SPECT/CT for the diagnosis of bone lesions of systemic sarcoidosis
We report a three-phase bone scintigraphy for the diagnosis of a peripheral bone lesion caused by systemic sarcoidosis. A 32-year-old man with suspected osteomyelitis of the right forefinger underwent three-phase bone scintigraphy with Tc-99m hydroxymethylene diphosphonate (HMDP) and single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT). The lesion was rich in blood flow acc...
متن کاملEsophageal hypomotility in systemic sclerosis: close relationship with pulmonary involvement.
PURPOSE Esophageal motility was assessed in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) by scintigraphy and compared with (i) extent of scleroderma, (ii) duration of disease, (iii) index of anti-topoisomerase I antibody (topo I), and (iv) pulmonary involvement. METHODS A multiple-swallow test was performed in 47 patients with SSc in the supine position with 99mTc-DTPA. A region of interest on the ...
متن کاملHigh frequency skin ultrasonography in systemic sclerosis
Background: Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder which is characterised by cutaneous and internal organ fibrosis. Raynaud’s phenomenon is the earliest feature and may precede the onset of the disease by months to years. The heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and other organs may be involved. Our aim was to evaluate skin thickness and echogenicity in systemic...
